序章 · 火星纪元第零天
2039年7月16日,”祝融三号”火星探测车在尤托邦平原东缘偏离了预定路线。
并非导航故障。任务控制中心的遥测数据显示,探测车的自主避障系统捕捉到了一个不该存在的高反射率目标——在火星表面平均反射率0.15的赤红荒原上,那个目标的反射率高达0.89,几乎与镜面等价。
北京飞控中心的值班员段一鸣在凌晨三点十七分注意到画面异常。他揉了揉眼睛,把咖啡杯从键盘旁挪开,然后靠近了屏幕。
祝融三号的广角相机传回的图像需要经过大约十一分钟的光速延迟。也就是说,此刻他看到的画面是十一分钟前的火星。在那片氧化铁染红的沙地上,孤零零地竖着一块牌子。
三角形。黄底。中央是一个巨大的黑色问号。
“这他妈……”段一鸣把手从键盘上抬起来,意识到自己正在面对人类文明史上最重要的一帧图像。他按下了通讯键:”周总,你最好现在来控制室。”
十七分钟后,高清窄角相机完成了对目标的精细拍摄。照片被重新传回地球——光子穿越了大约两亿两千万公里的真空,花了十一分七秒抵达北京。
图像异常清晰。
牌子高约六十厘米,由一种光谱分析无法识别的材料制成。它的三角轮廓与地球上任何一个国家的交通警示标志如出一辙——等边三角形,顶角朝上,黄色底板,黑色边框。区别只在于中央的图案:不是落石,不是弯道,不是行人。
是一个问号。
三天后,这张照片泄露到了互联网上。全世界同时失眠了。
第一章 · 你们看见了
联合国在泄露事件后的第72小时召开了紧急会议。会议没有任何意义。各国代表做了他们最擅长的事情——争吵,然后发表一份措辞模糊的联合声明。
真正有价值的工作在实验室里进行。
NASA喷气推进实验室、中国科学院以及欧空局联合组建了一个名为”路标”的跨国分析小组。他们用了三周时间得出了第一个令人不安的结论:牌子的底座与火星土壤之间不存在任何结合剂,也没有打地基的迹象。它就那么放在那里——或者更准确地说,悬浮在地面以上0.3毫米处。
第二个结论更加令人不安。光谱仪无法穿透牌子的表面。无论是红外、紫外、X射线还是伽马射线,所有波段的电磁辐射在接触牌子表面时都被完美吸收了——除了可见光波段。它只反射人眼可以看到的光。
“它是给人看的。”路标小组的首席科学家、MIT材料物理学家苏珊·帕克在报告中写道,”或者更精确地说——给会看的东西看的。”
没有人喜欢这个结论。
但真正的问题从第四十七天开始。
深圳南山区,科苑路与高新南一道的交叉口有一块限速60的交通标志。
2039年9月1日上午10时14分,一辆黑色特斯拉Model Y以78公里/小时的速度通过了那块标志。驾驶员名叫黄伟,是一家芯片公司的中层管理人员,赶着去开会。
他没有减速到60。
从交通摄像头的记录来看,车辆在经过标志的瞬间,四个轮胎同时失去了抓地力——并非爆胎,并非路面湿滑,而是车轮的转速被精确地强制降低到了每分钟与时速60公里对应的圈数。轮胎橡胶在惯性和突然减速之间摩擦出了白烟。ABS和ESC同时报错。车辆猛烈点头后稳稳停在了路面上,时速表归零后重新爬升——爬到60便无法再快一分。
黄伟以为刹车系统出了问题。特斯拉售后以为是软件Bug。深圳交警以为是一起普通故障。
同一天,全球各地至少报告了六百起类似事件。
日本东京,一名上班族在标有”小心滑倒”的地铁通道里重重摔倒——监控回放显示,他的鞋底在接触三角警示区域的一瞬间,摩擦系数趋近于零。地面是干燥的。
德国柏林,一条标有”注意野生动物”路牌的乡间公路上,一头完全不应该出现在勃兰登堡州的棕熊站在路中央。动物学家后来确认,这头熊在基因上不属于任何已知亚种。
巴西圣保罗,一所小学门口的”注意儿童”标志所覆盖的二十米范围内,所有成年人的行走速度被限制在不超过步行的最慢档——大约每秒0.5米。他们的腿没有受伤,肌肉没有萎缩,神经信号传导完全正常。他们只是快不了。
恐慌从社交媒体开始蔓延。
“#SignEffect”在推特上以每小时三百万次的速度增长。阴谋论者声称这是政府的超级武器实验,末日论者宣布这是《启示录》的第一印记,而科学家们在自己的实验室里面面相觑,因为他们面对的现象违反了已知物理学的每一条原则。
但路标小组里有一个人注意到了关键的时间线。
“你们不觉得奇怪吗?”组员陈恺,中科院理论物理所的研究员,在一次加密视频会议上说道,”所有的异常现象——全部——都开始于火星照片公开泄露之后。”
会议室沉默了四秒。
“你的意思是……”苏珊说。
“那块牌子。”陈恺说,”它就是一个问号。它在问一个问题。而照片泄露后,全人类同时看到了那个问号。我们回答了它。”
“回答了什么?”
“我们的好奇心。七十亿人同时对着那块牌子想:这是什么?——这就是答案。它不是在问我们问题。它是在确认:’你们是不是那种会好奇的生物?’”
“然后呢?”
“然后——”陈恺深吸一口气,”我们不及格了。”
第二章 · 牌子必须被遵守
事态在两周内从”异常”升级为”灾难”。
最初,各国政府试图用最简单粗暴的方式应对:拆掉牌子。中国住建部在一天之内下达了全国范围内移除所有非必要警示标志的紧急命令。执行人员发现了第一个残酷的规则——牌子的效力不在于物理存在,而在于认知存在。
一块”禁止通行”的标志被拆除后,原来的位置上什么都没有了。但每一个记得那里曾经有一块标志的人,仍然无法通过那段路。他们的脚会在标志原先所在的经纬度坐标上停下来,就像踩到了一堵隐形的墙。
而不知道那里曾有标志的人则可以自由通行。
“它的作用机制不是物理场。”陈恺在第17天的报告中写道,”是认知锚点。标志本身只是一个触发器,它将规则写入了观察者的认知框架中。你知道规则,你就被规则约束。”
这一发现催生了一个可怕的推论——那些从未被人见过的标志,不会产生异常效应。这从反面被证实了:偏远荒野中、无人问津的角落里、从未被任何人阅读过的标志,其周围一切正常。
问题是,在互联网时代,几乎不存在”从未被看见”的东西。
谷歌街景车拍摄过全球超过一千万公里的道路。每一个出现在街景中的标志都被看见了——被算法看见了,然后被点击街景的用户看见了。这是否算”看见”?算。事实证明,异常效应不区分肉眼和屏幕。一张标志的照片、一段标志出现在背景中的视频、甚至一幅画着标志的画——只要人类的视觉皮层处理了那个图像,规则就会写入。
“它利用了我们自己的神经网络。”北京师范大学认知神经科学实验室的戴铭教授在脑成像实验中发现,被影响的受试者的前额叶皮层和顶叶联合区出现了异常的高频同步振荡——与人类”理解规则”时的脑区激活模式完全重合。”这种异常在我们的大脑里伪装成了规则意识的一部分。大脑不认为它是入侵——它认为这就是应该遵守的规则。”
世界开始变形。
“斑马线”事件成为了这一阶段最具象征意义的画面。在全球所有标有”行人过街”标志的路口,行人只能踩在白色的斑马线条纹上。脚不能落在两条白线之间的黑色沥青上。如果你试图踩下去——不会有力场阻止你,不会有疼痛警告你,你只是做不到。你的运动神经元不会发出让腿落下的指令。就像你的大脑深处有一个根深蒂固的、不可违抗的信念:那里不能踩。
上班的人群像企鹅一样,一步一步跳着过马路。
这在社交媒体上引发了一波荒诞的短视频热潮,配乐是施特劳斯的《蓝色多瑙河》。但笑声在72小时后消失了,因为第一批死亡报告出现了——
英国M1高速公路上,一块”注意侧风”警示牌的覆盖范围内,一阵本不可能出现在那个季节、那个地形条件下的强烈横风将一辆双层巴士掀翻。十七人死亡。
印度新德里,一块被涂鸦修改过的标志——有人在”限速40”的4字上加了一笔变成了9——导致了那条路上所有车辆必须以90公里/小时的速度行驶。包括一辆刹车失灵的校车。
标志不判断对错。标志不理解语境。标志只执行它表面呈现的规则——对每一个看见它的人。
第三章 · 收容
各国政府不得不面对一个本质上是SCP式的问题:这种异常能被收容吗?
联合国安理会在第21天通过了2893号决议,成立”全球标识管理局”(Global Sign Administration, GSA),总部设在日内瓦,拥有超越国家主权的执行权力——自1945年以来人类最接近世界政府的一次尝试。
GSA的策略分为三个层面:
第一层,物理遮蔽。不是拆除标志,而是用不透光的黑布覆盖它们。实验证明:如果一个人从未看见过某个标志,该标志对其不产生效应。因此,覆盖标志后,所有新进入该区域的人不会受到影响。但已经看见过的人仍然被绑定。对于这些人,GSA启用了第二层措施。
第二层,认知干预。陈恺的团队发现,异常效应的强度与认知清晰度正相关。如果一个人对标志的记忆足够模糊,效应会减弱。基于此,GSA与各国卫生部门合作,开发了一种靶向记忆消退方案——本质上是一种改良的暴露疗法,通过反复呈现标志的失真变体来干扰大脑中储存的原始图像。成功率约为43%。
第三层,信息管制。GSA在全球互联网上部署了有史以来最大规模的图像过滤系统。所有包含交通标志图像的网页被降权或移除。谷歌街景暂停服务。所有关于标志异常效应的讨论帖被标记为”信息污染”——因为详细描述一个标志的效应,本身就会强化读者对该标志的认知,从而加深绑定。
这套体系勉强运行了六十天。
期间,人类社会以一种奇特的方式适应了新现实。所有新生产的交通标志被替换为纯文字指令——”前方道路弯曲”代替了弯道箭头符号。GSA发现,抽象的文字描述产生的异常效应远弱于图形符号。这与认知科学的基本原理一致:图像比文字更快、更深地编码进视觉记忆。
城市变得安静了。速度被限制,行人被规训,危险被标志精确地制造在它被警告的位置。某种意义上,世界变得前所未有地”安全”——只要你严格遵守每一块牌子说的话。
一些哲学家开始提出一种令人不舒服的观点:这是不是牌子的本意?它不是在惩罚人类——它是在训练人类。就像人类训练宠物一样。看到”坐”就坐下。看到”停”就停下。
人类被降维成了规则的执行器。
而真正的灾难在第104天降临。
第四章 · 月面
2039年12月28日,北京时间凌晨01:22,中国国家天文台云南观测站的值班天文学家廖雪发现月球的近面赤道区域出现了一个异常的高反照率区域。
起初她以为是设备故障。她校准了望远镜。图像依旧。她切换到另一台望远镜。图像依旧。她拨通了紫金山天文台的电话。对方也看到了。
然后是日本国立天文台、格林尼治皇家天文台、帕洛马山天文台、阿塔卡玛天文台——全球所有指向月球的望远镜都确认了同一件事。
月球表面出现了一个巨大的标志。
它是黄色的。三角形的。边长估测超过四百公里——以至于在地球上,任何视力正常的人只要仰头看月亮,就能隐约看见那片鲜黄。
标志上的图案是三只猴子。第一只双手捂眼。第二只双手捂耳。第三只双手捂嘴。
勿视。勿听。勿语。
“Oh God.”美国国家航空航天局局长在看到高分辨率图像后只说了这两个字。然后她想说第三个字。她发不出声了。
那晚,地球的夜面朝向月球。北京、东京、莫斯科、开罗、内罗毕——所有沉浸在夜色中的城市,所有仰头能看见月亮的地方,所有在室外偶然瞥见月光的人——在同一时刻失去了说话的能力。
不是喉咙被物理阻塞。声带完好,呼吸道通畅。他们的布罗卡区——大脑中负责语言产生的区域——停止了向发音器官发送指令。他们同时失去了听觉。不是耳蜗损毁,不是听神经断裂。他们的初级听觉皮层停止了处理声波信号。大脑不再将空气的振动解读为声音。
世界在一瞬间变得寂静。
地球的自转将这片寂静缓缓推向西方。随着夜幕推进,随着月亮在一座又一座城市的天空升起,越来越多的人看见了那个标志——直接看见,或通过窗户的反光看见,或通过一滩积水的倒影看见。
到了第二天白天,已经有人将月面标志的照片上传到了还在运转的互联网上。仍然拥有声音的白天半球的人们看见了那张照片。然后他们也沉默了。
48小时之内,地球上最后一个能说话的人——一个住在南极麦克默多站地下实验室、完全与外界隔绝的冰川学家——在同事破门而入给他看手机屏幕之后,也失去了声音。
七十五亿人,同时哑了,同时聋了。但他们仍然能看见。三只猴子中,只有”勿视”被豁免了。
陈恺在自己的笔记本上写下了颤抖的字:”它留下了视觉——因为它还要我们看见。它还没有说完。”
第五章 · 贪吃蛇
最初的七十二小时是人类有史以来最接近灭绝的一次。
没有声音意味着所有基于语音的通讯系统立刻失效。电话、对讲机、广播——全部变成了无用的塑料和金属。航空管制崩溃了。全球所有正在飞行的一万四千架民航客机失去了与塔台的语音联系。幸而现代客机的自动驾驶系统足够强大,大部分飞机依靠ACARS数据链和自动进近系统安全着陆。但有三十一架飞机坠毁了。七千二百人遇难。
医院是另一个地狱。ICU病房里的医生无法口头传达用药指令。护士无法呼叫支援。他们开始在白板上写字——这在最初的四十八小时里拯救了无数生命。
文字成了最后的堡垒。
电子邮件、短信、即时通讯软件——所有文字通讯渠道的流量在一天之内激增了九百倍。打字速度取代了口才,成为最重要的职业技能。各国政府通过文字发布紧急公告。证券交易所切换到了纯文本交易模式。
人类用了大约两周时间建立了一个纯文字的社会运转框架。不优雅,但勉强能用。
然后,在第119天,文字也开始消失。
第一个被注意到的案例发生在纽约时代广场。一块巨大的可口可乐LED广告牌上,”Coca-Cola”这个词的字母正在被什么东西一个一个地吃掉。监控录像记录了全过程。一个二维的、扁平的、黑色的线条状物体贴附在广告牌表面,像一条蛇一样蜿蜒移动。它的头部接触到字母”C”的一刻,”C”消失了。不是被遮挡,不是被擦除——是从LED像素阵列中彻底消失了。对应的像素点硬件完好,但拒绝显示任何文字字符。
这种实体被GSA编号为”SN-1”,很快被媒体——当媒体还能使用文字的时候——称为”贪吃蛇”。它们不是一条。它们是成千上万条。
贪吃蛇的行为模式被密集地观察和记录着,直到记录本身也被吃掉。根据残存的数据:第一,它们是严格的二维实体,只附着在表面上。第二,它们只吃具有语义功能的符号系统。第三,它们以残酷的层级顺序进食。
最先消失的是户外广告。然后是路牌和指示牌。然后是电子屏幕上的文字。接着是纸张。贪吃蛇从最新出版的印刷品开始,向历史深处蔓延。速度在加快。
第131天,贪吃蛇吃掉了古登堡圣经。第133天,死海古卷上的文字消失了。第138天,罗塞塔石碑上的文字被三条蛇同时吞噬。第141天,甲骨文消失了。
人类的文字史正在被逆向清除。
与此同时,数字世界的灾难更加迅猛。贪吃蛇发现了编程语言。HTML、CSS、JavaScript、Python、Java、C++。服务器一台接一台宕机。操作系统失效。BIOS失效。键盘上印着的字母消失了,只剩下光秃秃的黑色键帽。
第145天,全球互联网不存在了。
人类在五个月内从信息时代坠回了比石器时代更原始的状态——因为至少在石器时代,人类有语言,而现在连文字都没有了。
第六章 · 最后的符号
沉默。白纸。空屏幕。这是第146天的世界。
但人类没有死。
那个在月球上的标志说的是”勿视勿语勿听”——但人类仍然有眼睛、有手、有大脑。在非洲、在亚洲、在美洲原住民的社区中,手语使用者突然成了最重要的人。
突破出现在东京。一个名叫高桥理惠的十四岁女孩在她已经变成白纸的日记本上画了一个笑脸。笑脸没有被吃掉。她又画了一颗心。没有被吃掉。一个太阳的图案。一座山的轮廓。一把雨伞的简笔画。全都安然无恙。
贪吃蛇对图像不感兴趣——至少对不构成”语义符号系统”的图像不感兴趣。
但画画太慢了,表达太模糊了。人类需要一种比自由绘画更标准化、但又不属于”文字”的符号系统。
答案一直在他们的手机里——如果他们的手机还能开机的话。
Emoji。
Unicode标准中的Emoji字符集在技术定义上属于图形符号,而非文字字符。而贪吃蛇不吃画。
第160天,东京大学的残余工程团队重新启动了一台1980年代的日立大型机,用物理开关直接输入二进制指令。第165天,他们成功让屏幕显示了一个Emoji:👋。
这一天被后来的历史学家称为”第二次点火”——人类文明的重新启动。
第七章 · Emoji纪元
接下来的一年是人类历史上最疯狂的创造期。
工程师们搭建了一套完全基于图形符号的通讯标准。IP地址被替换为Emoji组合。路由表、数据包头、校验码——全部被重新设计为基于图形符号的格式。这听起来荒谬。事实上也确实荒谬。但它能用。
第200天,一条横跨太平洋的海底光缆被重新激活。日本和美国之间恢复了数据通讯。第一条跨洋消息的内容是:👋🌍❤️🤝💪
全球有电视信号的地区同时播放了这条消息。无数人在沉默中流泪。
随后是操作系统的重建。超过两万名工程师用了四个月时间创造了人类历史上第一个纯Emoji操作系统——它被非正式地称为”😊OS”。
😊OS的设计哲学是彻底抛弃文字。循环用🔄,条件判断用🔀,赋值用👉,输出用📤。这套语言被称为”👅”。它的运行效率大约是传统C编译器的百分之三。但在这个没有C的世界里,百分之三就是百分之百。
报纸复活了。《纽约时报》在第230天发行了历史上第一份纯Emoji报纸。头版大致如下:

一些语言学家指出了一个令人深思的事实:Emoji通讯系统的表达精度远低于任何一种自然语言。但它有一个前所未有的优势——它是全球统一的。一个东京人和一个内罗毕人和一个布宜诺斯艾利斯人,现在可以毫无障碍地”阅读”同一份报纸。语言的巴别塔在文字死亡的废墟上意外地倒塌了。
第八章 · 重返火星
人类文明在Emoji的框架上摇摇晃晃地站了起来,然后第一件事就是重新仰望星空。这很人类。
GSA在第280天被重组为”全球复兴委员会”(GRC)。GRC的首要目标只有一个:重返火星,面对那块引发一切的问号牌子。这不是报复。至少官方声明中不是。但所有人心里都知道这是报复。
技术重建的挑战是巨大的。但人类的物质基础仍在。工厂没有消失。火箭发动机没有被蛇吃掉——贪吃蛇只吃符号。
工程师们发现了一件幸运的事:肌肉记忆和程序性记忆不受影响。知识没有消失。承载知识的符号消失了。但知识本身——作为神经连接的模式——仍然活在每一个专业人员的大脑中。
一千多个工程团队用Emoji管理系统造出了火箭。不是一枚。是一千零二十四枚。
火箭的设计被极度简化。每枚火箭只搭载一名航天员、一套基础生命维持系统、一套最低限度的导航设备,以及——一块牌子。三角形。黄底。图案是一只握紧的正面拳头。
第九章 · 发射
2041年3月14日。发射日。
全球现存的十七个航天发射场同时进入倒计时。从酒泉到卡纳维拉尔角,从拜科努尔到库鲁,从种子岛到斯里赫里戈达,一千零二十四枚火箭矗立在各自的发射台上。它们的涂装清一色是黄底黑框——刻意模仿了那块火星牌子的配色。这不是工程上的需要。这是一种声明。
倒计时:🔟…9️⃣…8️⃣…7️⃣…6️⃣…5️⃣…4️⃣…3️⃣…2️⃣…1️⃣…🔥🚀
一千零二十四枚火箭在二十分钟的时间窗口内依次点火升空。地面上的人们仰头望着天空中密集的尾迹。他们无法欢呼——声带仍然沉默。但他们挥舞着手臂、跺着脚、互相拥抱。泪水是不需要声音的。
七百零七枚火箭进入了火星轨道。其中四百二十三枚成功执行了制动减速。一百八十六枚成功着陆。最终,有三十一名航天员活着站在了火星的地面上。
第十章 · 牌子
航天员林杉是第一个到达目标区域的人。她是中国空军前飞行员,三十七岁,1.73米,在沉默世界里学会了用Emoji写日记。她驾驶电动漫游车在火星的红色砂地上行驶了十四个小时。
那块牌子在夕阳中矗立着。和两年前探测车拍摄到的照片一模一样。三角形,黄底,黑色的问号。六十厘米高。安静地悬浮在地面上方零点三毫米处。
林杉站在牌子面前,看着那个问号。问号看着她。
某种意义上,她应该感到敬畏。这是人类第一次面对外星智能的造物。按照一切科幻小说和一切外交礼仪,她应该庄重地、谨慎地、代表全人类地做出某种意义深远的举动。
林杉抬起右脚,对准牌子的底部,用力踹了过去。
牌子飞了出去。它以一个弧形轨迹飞出了大约二十米远,无声地砸在红色的沙地上,弹了两下,翻了个面。黑色的问号朝下,扣在了火星的尘埃里。
林杉没有回头看它。
她从漫游车的后备箱里取出了那块人类带来的牌子。三角形,黄底,黑色边框。中央的图案是一只正面的拳头——五个手指紧握,拇指压在食指和中指外侧。这是人类最古老的手势之一,跨越所有文化,含义始终如一。
她把它插在了火星的土壤里。牌子的尖桩陷入了松软的红土,稳稳地立住了。
林杉后退两步,通过宇航服的摄像头将图像传回了地球。信号穿越了大约两亿公里的真空,花了十一分钟抵达地球。全世界在沉默中看见了它。
三角形。黄底。一个拳头。
尾声
那块被踹飞的问号牌子在火星表面躺了约三十七分钟后消失了。没有分解的过程,没有光效,它只是不再那里了。
与此同时,月球表面的三猴标志缓慢褪色——黄色变为奶白,奶白变为灰,灰变为月面本身的颜色。四个小时后,月球恢复了原貌。
声音没有立刻回来。但在第二天早晨,一个住在雷克雅未克的五岁冰岛女孩对她的母亲说了一个词——”mamma”——然后她们同时哭了起来。
在接下来的一周内,听觉和语音逐渐恢复。先是儿童,然后是老人,最后是中青年。没有人知道这个顺序的逻辑。也许好奇心最轻的人最先被释放。也许不是。
文字的恢复更加缓慢。被吃掉的文字并没有恢复。古登堡圣经仍然是空白的,甲骨文仍然只是光滑的骨头。一切被消灭的文字需要重新书写。这需要几十年——也许更久。
但人们发现了一件意想不到的事:Emoji没有消失。那套在绝望中构建的图形符号通讯系统仍然在运转,仍然在被使用,尤其是在国际交流中。语言的巴别塔被推倒过一次。人们记住了没有墙的感觉。
至于那块插在火星上的拳头牌子——它仍然在那里。
没有人确切地知道它传达了什么信息。一些人认为它是威胁:”我们打回来了。”另一些人认为它是宣言:”我们不会停下来。”还有人认为它是一个和那块问号牌子性质相同的测试——只不过方向相反。
如果某种智慧曾经对人类的好奇心下了判决书,那么人类的回答就写在那块牌子上。
一只紧握的拳头。不是举起来挥向谁的。只是握紧了。不松开。

Prologue · Mars Era, Day Zero
On July 16, 2039, the Zhurong-3 Mars rover deviated from its planned route on the eastern edge of Utopia Planitia.
It was not a navigation failure. Images transmitted by Zhurong-3’s wide-angle camera had to travel through roughly eleven minutes of light-delay. Which meant what he was looking at now was Mars as it had been eleven minutes ago. And on that iron-oxide-red sand, standing alone, was a sign.
Triangular. Yellow background. A large black question mark at the center.
“What the f—” Duan lifted his hands from the keyboard, realizing he was looking at the most important frame of imagery in the history of human civilization. He pressed the comm button: “Director Zhou, you need to come to the control room. Now.”
Seventeen minutes later, the high-resolution narrow-angle camera completed its detailed survey. The photographs were transmitted back to Earth — photons crossing roughly 220 million kilometers of vacuum, arriving in Beijing eleven minutes and seven seconds later.
The image was extraordinarily clear.
The sign stood approximately sixty centimeters tall, constructed from a material spectral analysis could not identify. Its triangular silhouette was identical to traffic warning signs used by every nation on Earth — equilateral triangle, apex up, yellow background, black border. The only difference was the symbol at the center. Not a falling rock. Not a curve. Not a pedestrian.
A question mark.
Three days later, the photograph leaked onto the internet. The entire world stopped sleeping.
Chapter 1 · You Have Seen
The United Nations called an emergency session 72 hours after the leak. The session accomplished nothing. Representatives did what they did best — argued, then issued a communiqué in careful ambiguity.
The real work happened in laboratories.
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the European Space Agency formed a joint international analysis team called “Waypoint.” Three weeks in, they reached their first disturbing conclusion: there was no adhesive between the sign’s base and the Martian soil, and no evidence of any foundation work. It simply stood there — or more precisely, hovered 0.3 millimeters above the surface.
The second conclusion was more disturbing. Spectrometers could not penetrate the sign’s surface. Infrared, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma ray — electromagnetic radiation across every band was perfectly absorbed on contact — except the visible spectrum. It reflected only the light the human eye could see.
“It is meant to be seen,” wrote Susan Park, the team’s chief scientist and MIT materials physicist. “More precisely — meant to be seen by something that can see.”
Nobody liked this conclusion.
But the real problems began on day forty-seven.
In Nanshan District, Shenzhen, at the intersection of Keyuan Road and Gaoxin South First Road, there was a speed limit sign: 60 km/h.
At 10:14 a.m. on September 1, 2039, a black Tesla Model Y passed that sign at 78 kilometers per hour. The driver, Huang Wei, was a mid-level manager at a chip company, running late for a meeting.
He did not slow down to 60.
Traffic camera footage showed that at the instant the vehicle passed the sign, all four tires simultaneously lost traction — not a blowout, not a wet road, but the wheels’ rotational speed being precisely and forcibly reduced to the RPM corresponding to 60 km/h. The tires left white streaks of rubber smoke as inertia fought the sudden deceleration. ABS and ESC threw simultaneous error codes. The vehicle lurched and stabilized, the speedometer dropping to zero and climbing again — reaching 60 and going no further.
Huang Wei assumed his brakes had failed. Tesla service assumed a software bug. Shenzhen traffic police assumed a routine technical failure.
That same day, at least six hundred similar incidents were reported worldwide.
Tokyo, Japan: an office worker slipped heavily in a subway corridor marked “Caution: Slippery Surface” — footage showed the friction coefficient of his shoe soles approaching zero the instant they touched the warning area. The ground was dry.
Berlin, Germany: on a rural road marked “Wildlife Crossing,” a brown bear stood in the middle of the road. Zoologists later confirmed it belonged to no known subspecies.
São Paulo, Brazil: within a twenty-meter radius of a “Children Crossing” sign, all adults were limited to approximately 0.5 meters per second. Their legs were uninjured. Their muscles were intact. Their nerve conduction was normal. They simply could not move faster.
Panic spread through social media. “#SignEffect” grew on Twitter at three million posts per hour. Scientists in their laboratories exchanged bewildered glances, because what they were witnessing violated every known principle of physics.
But someone on the Waypoint team had noticed a critical detail.
“Doesn’t anyone find this strange?” said Chen Kai, a researcher from the CAS Institute of Theoretical Physics. “Every anomaly — all of them — began only after the Mars photograph was leaked publicly.”
Four seconds of silence.
“You mean…” said Susan.
“The sign,” Chen Kai said. “It is a question mark. It was asking a question. And after the photograph leaked, all of humanity saw that question mark simultaneously. We answered it.”
“Answered what?”
“Our curiosity. Seven billion people looked at that sign and thought: what is this? — that was the answer. It wasn’t asking us a question. It was confirming: ‘Are you the kind of beings who are curious?’”
“And then?”
“And then—” Chen Kai took a slow breath. “We failed.”
Chapter 2 · Signs Must Be Obeyed
The situation escalated from “anomalous” to “catastrophic” within two weeks.
Initially, governments tried the most direct solution: take the signs down. China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development issued an emergency order to remove all non-essential warning signs nationwide within a single day. The crews discovered the first brutal rule — a sign’s power resided not in its physical presence, but in its cognitive presence.
After a “No Entry” sign was removed, nothing stood in its former location. But everyone who remembered that a sign had once been there still could not pass that stretch of road. Their feet would stop at the sign’s former GPS coordinates, as though hitting an invisible wall.
But anyone who didn’t know a sign had once been there could walk through freely.
“The mechanism is not a physical field,” Chen Kai wrote in his Day 17 report. “It is a cognitive anchor. The sign itself is merely a trigger — it writes the rule into the observer’s cognitive framework. You know the rule; the rule binds you.”
This finding gave rise to a terrifying corollary: signs that had never been seen by anyone would produce no anomalous effect. Confirmed by negative evidence — signs in remote wilderness, in ignored corners, signs no human being had ever read — their surroundings were all normal.
The problem was that in the internet age, almost nothing had “never been seen.”
Google Street View had photographed more than ten million kilometers of roads worldwide. Every sign that appeared in Street View had been seen — first by an algorithm, then by users who clicked on it. Did that count as “seeing”? Yes. It turned out the anomalous effect made no distinction between the naked eye and a screen. A photograph of a sign, a video in which a sign appeared in the background, even a painting featuring a sign — so long as the human visual cortex processed that image, the rule was written in.
“It exploits our own neural networks,” said Professor Dai Ming of Beijing Normal University’s cognitive neuroscience lab. “This anomaly disguises itself as part of our sense of social regulation. The brain does not recognize it as an intrusion — it believes this is a rule it should obey.”
The world began to warp.
The “crosswalk incident” became the most emblematic image of this period. At every intersection bearing a “Pedestrian Crossing” sign, pedestrians could only step on the white stripes. Feet could not land on the black asphalt between them. If you tried — there was no force field stopping you, no pain warning you. You simply could not do it. Your motor neurons would not issue the command for your leg to descend. As though somewhere deep in your brain there existed a profound, unoverridable conviction: you cannot step there.
Office workers crossed streets in penguin-like hops, one white stripe at a time.
This sparked a wave of absurdist short videos on social media, scored to Strauss’s Blue Danube. The laughter disappeared seventy-two hours later, when the first fatality reports emerged —
On the M1 motorway in the UK, within the coverage area of a “High Winds” warning sign, a gust impossible in that season and terrain flipped a double-decker bus. Seventeen died.
In New Delhi, India, a sign vandalized by graffiti — someone had added a stroke to the “4” in “Speed Limit 40,” turning it into a “9” — forced every vehicle on that road to travel at exactly 90 kilometers per hour. Including a school bus with failed brakes.
Signs did not judge right from wrong. Signs did not understand context. Signs enforced whatever rule they displayed on their surface — to every person who had ever seen them.
Chapter 3 · Containment
Governments found themselves confronting a problem that was essentially SCP in nature: could this anomaly be contained?
The UN Security Council passed Resolution 2893 on Day 21, establishing the Global Sign Administration (GSA), headquartered in Geneva, with executive authority superseding national sovereignty — the closest humanity had come to a world government since 1945.
The GSA’s strategy operated on three levels.
Level one: physical occlusion. Not removing signs, but covering them with opaque black cloth. If a person had never seen a particular sign, it would have no effect on them. But those who had already seen them remained bound. For these individuals, the GSA deployed level two.
Level two: cognitive intervention. Chen Kai’s team developed a targeted memory-attenuation protocol — essentially a modified exposure therapy that repeatedly presented distorted variants of the sign to disrupt the original image stored in the brain. Success rate: approximately 43%.
Level three: information control. The GSA deployed the largest image-filtering system in internet history. All web pages containing images of traffic signs were de-ranked or removed. Google Street View suspended service. All discussion posts about the anomalous effects were labeled “information contamination” — because describing a sign’s effect would itself reinforce the reader’s mental model of that sign, deepening the binding.
This system limped along for sixty days.
During that time, human society adapted in strange ways. All newly produced traffic signs were replaced with plain text instructions — “Curved road ahead” replacing a curve arrow. Cities grew quieter. Speeds were limited, pedestrians regulated, dangers engineered precisely at the locations the signs warned about. In a way, the world had become safer than it had ever been — so long as you obeyed every sign to the letter.
Some philosophers began to voice an uncomfortable proposition: was this the sign’s intention? It was not punishing humanity — it was training humanity. The way humans train pets. See “Sit,” sit. See “Stop,” stop.
Humanity had been reduced to a rule-execution machine.
The real catastrophe arrived on Day 104.
Chapter 4 · Lunar Surface
On December 28, 2039, at 01:22 Beijing time, astronomer Liao Xue noticed an anomalous high-albedo region on the near-equatorial face of the Moon.
She recalibrated. The image remained. She switched to a second telescope. It remained. She called Purple Mountain Observatory. They saw it too. Then the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, Palomar, Atacama — every telescope pointed at the Moon confirmed the same thing.
A massive sign had appeared on the lunar surface.
Yellow. Triangular. Its estimated side length exceeded four hundred kilometers — so large that on Earth, any person with normal vision who glanced up at the Moon could faintly make out that bright yellow patch.
The sign depicted three monkeys. The first covered its eyes. The second covered its ears. The third covered its mouth.
See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.
“Oh God.” Those were the only words NASA’s administrator managed after seeing the high-resolution image. Then she tried to say a third word. No sound came out.
That night, the night side of Earth faced the Moon. Beijing, Tokyo, Moscow, Cairo, Nairobi — all lost the ability to speak at the same moment.
Not a physical obstruction. Vocal cords intact, airway clear. Their Broca’s area simply stopped sending commands to the vocal organs. They simultaneously lost their hearing. Their primary auditory cortex stopped processing sound wave signals. Their brains no longer interpreted vibrations in the air as sound.
The world fell silent in an instant.
Earth’s rotation carried that silence slowly westward. As night advanced, as the Moon rose over one city after another, more and more people saw the sign — directly, through a window’s reflection, in the mirror of a puddle.
By the following day, people had uploaded photographs of the lunar sign to the still-functioning internet. The dayside populations who still had their voices saw those photographs. Then they too fell silent.
Within 48 hours, the last person on Earth who could still speak — a glaciologist at a subterranean lab at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, completely cut off from the outside world — lost his voice when colleagues broke down his door and showed him a phone screen.
Seven and a half billion people. Simultaneously mute. Simultaneously deaf.
But they could still see. Of the three monkeys, only “see no evil” had been withheld.
Chen Kai wrote in a trembling hand in his notebook: “It preserved vision — because it still needs us to see. It is not finished yet.”
Chapter 5 · Snake
The first seventy-two hours were the closest humanity had ever come to extinction.
No sound meant all voice-based communication systems failed instantly. Air traffic control collapsed. All fourteen thousand commercial aircraft in flight worldwide lost voice contact with their towers. Most planes landed safely via ACARS data links and automated approach systems. But thirty-one aircraft crashed. Seven thousand two hundred people died.
Hospitals were another kind of hell. ICU doctors could not verbally relay medication orders. Nurses could not call for backup. They began writing on whiteboards — this saved countless lives in the first forty-eight hours.
Text became the last fortress.
Humanity needed roughly two weeks to build a functional social operating framework based entirely on text. Inelegant, but barely workable.
Then, on Day 119, text began to disappear.
The first noticed case occurred at Times Square, New York. On a massive Coca-Cola LED billboard, the letters of “Coca-Cola” were being consumed one by one. Surveillance footage captured the entire process: a two-dimensional, flat, black, thread-like entity adhered to the billboard surface and moved in a serpentine pattern. The moment its head touched the letter “C,” the “C” disappeared — completely gone from the LED pixel array. The corresponding pixels were physically intact but refused to display any text character.
The GSA designated the entity “SN-1.” The media — while they could still use text — called them “Snakes.” Not just one. Thousands upon thousands.
They were strictly two-dimensional entities. They ate only symbol systems with semantic function — letters, Chinese characters, Arabic numerals, every script humans used to record language. And they fed in a brutal hierarchical order.
Outdoor advertising vanished first. Then street signs. Then text on screens. Then paper — newspapers, then books. Libraries became the main battleground.
Day 131: the Snakes consumed the Gutenberg Bible. Day 133: the Dead Sea Scrolls. Day 138: the Rosetta Stone. Day 141: oracle bone inscriptions — three thousand three hundred years of Chinese history reduced to smooth bone.
The entirety of human written history was being erased in reverse.
The Snakes then discovered programming languages. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, Java, C++. Servers crashed one by one. Operating systems failed. BIOS failed. Letters disappeared from keyboard keycaps, leaving bare black plastic.
Day 145: the global internet no longer existed.
Within five months, humanity had fallen from the information age into a state more primitive than the Stone Age — because at least in the Stone Age, humans had spoken language. Now they had no text either.
Chapter 6 · The Last Symbol
Silence. White paper. Empty screens. This was the world on Day 146.
But humanity had not died. Humans still had eyes, hands, and brains. They could see each other, touch each other, convey survival information through gesture and expression. In Africa, in Asia, in Indigenous American communities, sign language users became the most important people.
The breakthrough came in Tokyo. A fourteen-year-old girl named Rie Takahashi drew a smiley face in what had become her blank-paged diary. The smiley face was not consumed. She drew a heart. Not consumed. A sun. A mountain outline. A simple umbrella. All untouched.
The Snakes had no interest in images — at least not images that didn’t constitute “semantic symbol systems.”
But drawing was too slow, too ambiguous. Humanity needed something more standardized than free-form pictures, but not “writing.”
The answer had been in their phones all along.
Emoji.
The Emoji character set in the Unicode standard was, by technical definition, a collection of graphic symbols, not text characters. No alphabet, no grammar, no morphemes. Each Emoji was a standalone small picture.
And the Snakes did not eat pictures.
Day 160: the residual engineering team at the University of Tokyo restarted a 1980s Hitachi mainframe, inputting binary instructions directly using physical switches. Day 165: they successfully rendered an Emoji on the screen. 👋
This day was called by later historians “the Second Ignition” — the restart of human civilization.
Chapter 7 · The Emoji Era
The year that followed was the most furious period of creation in human history.
Engineers built a communications standard based entirely on graphic symbols. IP addresses were replaced by Emoji combinations. Routing tables, packet headers, checksums — all redesigned in graphic symbol format. It sounded absurd. It genuinely was absurd. But it worked.
Day 200: a trans-Pacific undersea cable was reactivated. The content of the first transoceanic message was: 👋🌍❤️🤝💪
Countless people wept in silence.
A team of more than twenty thousand engineers, distributed across three continents, spent four months creating humanity’s first pure-Emoji operating system — unofficially called 😊OS. All function calls, variable names, and logical operators were represented by Emoji. Loops used 🔄, conditionals used 🔀, assignment used 👉, output used 📤.

The Tower of Babel had accidentally fallen in the ruins of dead writing.
Chapter 8 · Return to Mars
Human civilization stood up on the scaffolding of Emoji, shakily, and the first thing it did was look back up at the stars.
This was very human.
The GSA was reorganized on Day 280 into the Global Restoration Council (GRC), with one primary objective: return to Mars, and confront the question mark sign that started everything.
This was not revenge. At least not in the official statement. But everyone knew it was revenge.
The technical challenges were immense. Space systems were among humanity’s most complex engineering achievements — millions of lines of code, tens of thousands of precision components, thousands of suppliers. And now all technical documentation was blank paper, all software was a hollow shell, all communication conducted in a symbol system with the expressive capacity of a three-year-old.
But humanity’s physical infrastructure remained. Factories had not disappeared. Rocket engines had not been consumed by Snakes — the Snakes ate only symbols. Metal, fuel, optical lenses, gyroscopes, solar panels — all the hardware sat dusty in warehouses, intact and undamaged.
Engineers discovered something fortunate: muscle memory and procedural memory were unaffected. A technician who had welded rocket engines for twenty years didn’t need an operations manual — his hands knew what to do. Knowledge had not disappeared. The symbols that carried knowledge had disappeared. But knowledge itself — as patterns of neural connection — still lived in the brain of every specialist.
More than a thousand engineering teams used an Emoji-based management system to build rockets. Not one rocket. One thousand and twenty-four.
Each rocket carried a single astronaut, a basic life-support system, a minimal navigation suite, and — a sign. Triangular. Yellow background. Depicting a raised clenched fist.
Chapter 9 · Launch
March 14, 2041. Launch day.
All seventeen surviving space launch facilities on Earth entered simultaneous countdown. From Jiuquan to Cape Canaveral, from Baikonur to Kourou, from Tanegashima to Sriharikota, one thousand and twenty-four rockets stood at their launch pads. Their livery was uniformly yellow with black trim — deliberately echoing the color scheme of that Martian sign. Not an engineering requirement. A declaration.

Seven hundred and seven rockets entered Martian orbit. Four hundred and twenty-three successfully executed deceleration burns. One hundred and eighty-six landed successfully.
In the end, thirty-one astronauts stood alive on the surface of Mars.
Chapter 10 · The Sign
Astronaut Lin Shan was the first to reach the target area.
She was a former Chinese Air Force pilot, thirty-seven years old, 1.73 meters tall, who had learned to write diary entries in Emoji during the silent years. Her landing point was approximately a hundred and twenty kilometers from the sign. She drove an electric rover across the red Martian sand for fourteen hours.
The sign stood in the Martian dusk — if one could call the pale orange Martian twilight a dusk. Identical to the photograph the rover had taken two years ago. Triangular, yellow background, black question mark. Sixty centimeters tall. Hovering quietly 0.3 millimeters above the ground.
Lin Shan stepped out of the rover. Her boots pressed into the iron oxide dust of Mars, leaving shallow prints. She stood before the sign and looked at the question mark.
The question mark looked at her.
In a sense, she should have felt awe. This was the first time humanity faced an artifact of an extraterrestrial intelligence. According to every science fiction novel and every diplomatic protocol, she should have performed some solemn, careful, profoundly meaningful act on behalf of all humanity.
Lin Shan raised her right foot, aimed at the base of the sign, and kicked it.
The sign flew. It traced an arc roughly twenty meters, hit the red sand without a sound, bounced twice, flipped over. The black question mark faced down, pressed into the Martian dust.
Lin Shan did not look back at it.
She retrieved the human-made sign from the rover’s cargo hold. Triangular, yellow background, black border. At the center: a fist facing forward — five fingers clenched, thumb pressed against the outside of index and middle fingers. One of humanity’s oldest gestures, spanning every culture, its meaning always the same.
She drove it into the Martian soil. The stake sank into the soft red earth and stood firm.
Lin Shan stepped back two paces and transmitted the image to Earth through her suit’s camera.
The signal crossed roughly two hundred million kilometers of vacuum. Reaching Earth in eleven minutes.
The entire world saw it in silence.
Triangular. Yellow background. A fist.
Epilogue
The kicked question mark sign lay on the Martian surface for approximately thirty-seven minutes, then disappeared. No process of decomposition, no light effect — it simply was no longer there.
Simultaneously, the three-monkey sign on the lunar surface slowly faded — yellow to cream, cream to gray, gray to the Moon’s own color. Four hours later, the Moon was restored.
Sound did not return immediately.
But the following morning, a five-year-old Icelandic girl in Reykjavik said one word to her mother upon waking — “mamma” — and they both began to cry. This became the first documented case of a human recovering the ability to speak.
Over the following week, hearing and speech gradually returned. Children first, then the elderly, then young and middle-aged adults. Nobody knew the logic of this sequence. Perhaps the least curious were released first. Perhaps not.
The return of text was slower. The text consumed by the Snakes did not come back. The Gutenberg Bible remained blank. Oracle bones remained smooth bone. Everything destroyed would need to be written again. Decades — perhaps longer.
But people discovered something unexpected: Emoji had not disappeared. Even as text gradually returned, that system of graphic symbols built in despair, that ugly but functional 😊OS, that newspaper everyone could read — they kept running, kept being used, especially in international communication.
The Tower of Babel had been toppled once. People remembered what it felt like without the walls.
As for the fist sign planted on Mars — it was still there.
Nobody knew exactly what it communicated. Some believed it was a threat: “We’ll hit back.” Others believed it was a declaration: “We will not stop.” Still others believed it was a test of the same nature as the question mark sign — only with the direction reversed.
If some intelligence had once passed judgment on humanity’s curiosity, then humanity’s answer was written in that sign.
A clenched fist.
Not raised to strike anyone.
Just clenched.
Not letting go.
